Tonight, we switch on the dark.
Not the bargain-bin darkness. Not the doom-scrolling darkness. Not the darkness that arrives in an envelope marked Final Reminder.
I mean the proper dark. The sea-dark. The dream-dark. The dark rolling in off the Irish Sea.
Because Blackpool has always had a strange relationship with light. Most places use it to see by. Blackpool uses it to dream by.
For well over a century people have been arriving here in search of something. Excitement. Escape. Romance. Reinvention. A decent weekend. A terrible weekend. A story they could spend the rest of their life improving.
And the town has always obliged. Not because Blackpool is perfect. Quite the opposite.
Blackpool is built from weather, longing, neon, noise, glamour, grit, bad decisions, brilliant ideas and the stubborn refusal to know the difference. That's why we're here.
For the next three days this town becomes a giant shared hallucination. DJs bending time. Cinema turning darkness into light. Theatre transforming rooms into other worlds.
Art appearing where you least expect it, like a revelation or a parking ticket.
Look around. Every person here arrived carrying a private dream. Something half-formed. Half-remembered. Half-believed.
And for a few days those dreams get thrown together. They collide. They multiply. They start talking to each other. That's what a festival is. Not an event. A temporary republic of imagination.
This town has spent generations making the impossible visible. Throwing light into the sea mist. Building constellations on tram routes.
So welcome to The Black Lights. Three days of music, cinema, theatre, art and beautiful confusion. Three days of dreaming with your eyes open. Three days in a town that has always known the truth: sometimes the brightest lights are the ones you find in the dark.
